Malacca (Malay: Melaka) is located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, next to the Straits of Malacca. It is the third smallest Malaysian state. Yet, Malacca is dubbed "The Historic State", and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
It all started in c.1400. Parameswara, a prince from Palembang, fled to Temasek in order to escape from a war in Majapahit. He was welcomed and treated well by the ruler of Temasek, Tamagi. However, as he wanted to become the ruler of Temasek, he killed Tamagi, angering the king of Siam, as Temasek was a vassal state of Siam. He sent his battle fleets and warriors to kill Parameswara, causing him to escape from Temasek, going further up north. While resting under a tree, Parameswara saw his hunting dogs chasing a mousedeer, which turned around and kicked one of the dogs. He was impressed by the courage of the mousedeer and decided to settle down there, naming the place after the Melaka tree that he was resting under. Watch a short clip in order to find out more. |
